"As you can see, Althea, we think, is an apt name to represent a resilient, brave, and courageous group of women healers who carry themselves with grace and perseverance. All while doing it beautifully. Because that's who you are."
-Mariela, Founder & Fellow Althea Sister

Althea, possibly originating from “althein” which means “to heal” or “to cure” in Greek, can be traced back to Greek mythology, and has had roots and profound meaning in other cultures. In Hebrew, it means “ascension,” while in Sanskrit, it means “truth” or “reality.” Throughout history, the name Althea has been used by many cultures and has evolved to include various meanings and interpretations. It represents complexity, duality, strength, courage, and grace.
Althea shows up in medicine, astronomy, literature, and even music. Althea is a character revered for her beauty in Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The song “Althea” by the Grateful Dead is a tribute to a woman who embodies the ideals of freedom and expression. In botany, Althea is a genus of plants commonly known as hollyhocks. These plants are known for their tall, showy flowers and have been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. The marshmallow plant, known for its healing properties, is called Althea officinalis. In astronomy, Althea is the name of a minor planet discovered in 1861. It is located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. And most recently, the name has come to represent strength, perseverance, and the breaking of barriers as Althea Gibson was the first black woman to win a Grand Slam title in tennis.

An ancient and visually striking flowering plant whose lineage predates many other floral species, the magnolia has existed for over 100 million years, a history that contributes to its symbolic endurance and perseverance.
The large, stately blossoms sit high on the tree, representing a regal and imposing presence that inspires self-respect and poise, while its size and form contribute to an image of graceful strength and unwavering character.
Representative of rich spiritual significance and its connection to various aspects of life and personal growth, this strikingly beautiful flower carries a myriad of meanings, from love and purity to femininity and change, and dignity.
It's no wonder the magnolia immediately became the symbol of the Althea sisters.

The 528 Hz frequency is often known as the "Miracle Tone" or "Love Frequency" and is one of the tones associated with the Solfeggio scale, a series of frequencies believed by many to promote harmony, transformation, and well-being. While modern scientific evidence has not confirmed the extraordinary healing claims often attributed to 528 Hz, its symbolism has resonated deeply within wellness, mindfulness, and personal growth communities. It has become a powerful representation of restoration, balance, and the capacity for positive change.
Historically, 528 Hz is linked to interpretations of ancient sacred music and Gregorian chant traditions, where sound was viewed as a tool for reflection, connection, and spiritual renewal. Over time, it came to symbolize the idea that healing is not simply about curing what is broken, but about restoring alignment between mind, body, purpose, and self. Whether experienced through music, meditation, or personal reflection, the frequency serves as a reminder that transformation begins when we reconnect with our authentic selves.
This symbolism is especially meaningful for women physicians. Every day, they dedicate themselves to healing, leading, nurturing, and caring for others, often while balancing countless personal and professional roles. In the process, it can become easy to lose sight of the person behind the physician. The essence of 528 Hz reminds us that self-restoration is not a luxury—it is a necessity. To continue healing others, we must remain connected to ourselves.
At Althea, the Miracle Tone serves as a metaphor for our mission: helping women physicians return to their own frequency. Like the magnolia that symbolizes our community, we believe true strength comes not from sacrificing ourselves, but from remaining rooted in authenticity, balance, and purpose. Althea is a place where women physicians can reconnect with who they are, find harmony among the many roles they play, and rediscover the resonance of their own voice.
