Joining Althea is not something you do, but someone you become.
When someone extended an invitation to you to join our sisterhood, they extended a part of themselves that said: "I see you. I hear you. And I am here for you. Because I get it."
Althea is comprised of like-minded professional women physicians that are constantly building, carrying, shifting, pivoting, dancing around and floating while trying to keep balance of every single piece that makes them who they are, and what they do, and what's expected of them. Every. Single. Day.
Just like you.
A membership in Althea is not about things and subscriptions that arrive in your mailbox, though you will get insights in your inbox often, sort of things that make you stop and think about what really matters.
It's not about membership to high-end social gatherings, though we will gather a lot. In sweats. Maybe in pajamas. Make-up or no make-up. Doesn't matter because this is a no judgement zone. You will have private access to virtual gatherings with other women physicians often to talk about all sorts of topics... like the beauty (and perils) of motherhood, surviving between the morning school rush and the OR schedule, the daunting toll paid for earning so much more than your spouse and the effects that has on your relationship, and how you thrive in medicine despite your chromosome. Yes, we will bear it all, and it will be cathartic, and finally liberating. This will always be safe space.
There will also be get-togethers in person. A chance to spend time with each other sipping wine and maybe painting, maybe dinners or luncheons, and a few lectures with experts reminding us to take care of ourselves and pointing us in the right direction.
Membership in Althea is about sisterhood. It's about coming together in a welcoming environment that allows you to be yourself, without having to lock the bathroom door to have some quiet space. It's about being real with one another and about leaning in, always genuine, always in safe space. Because we will do that for each other.
So don't expect a to do list. You have plenty of those already. But do expect to be. Just be.
